Reagan Airport Sleep Pods (Capsule Hotels Near DCA)

If you are facing a layover, have a flight cancellation or delay, or have a morning flight and wondering what sleep options are and perhaps wondering about the presence of sleep pods in Washington DC Airport, our guide will get you comfortable and at ease.

We have designed our guide to suit any first-time flier to DCA and long-time layover veterans. We understand the airport can be a stressful place, especially when you are tired and just want to rest. That is why we have compiled a list of sleep options and sleep pod availability at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport(DCA).

Does DCA Airport Have Sleep Pods?

Unfortunately, Washington DC Airport has not installed sleep pods at any of its terminals and the big sleep pod operators such as Minute Suites, Yotel and GoSleep have not made any attempts to expand to this airport. I could not find information on any upcoming plans to install any innovative compact sleep solutions in any of DCA’s terminals.

Minute Suites, the biggest sleep pod operator in the US has not made any indication in its blog on any upcoming plans to install its mini-suites pods at DCA.

Nap Pods Near DCA Airport:

There are sleep pods and capsule hotels near DCA, located 5.3 miles and 5.7 miles away, respectively. The U Street Capsule Hostel, 5.3 miles from DCA, offers compact and private sleeping pods with essential amenities like air conditioning, soundproofing, and free Wi-Fi.

It also features shared facilities such as a lounge, outdoor seating, and a coffee shop, making it a convenient budget-friendly option.

The citizenM Washington DC NoMa Hotel, 5.7 miles from DCA, provides a more upscale experience with modern, technologically advanced rooms equipped with XL king-size beds, mood lighting, power showers, and smart TVs, along with 24/7 food and drink service and stylish common areas. Both options cater to different preferences and budgets for travelers near DCA.

2 Possible Reasons DCA Does Not/Won’t Have Sleep Pods:

  • Space Constraints at DCA: Due to its compact design, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) operates at full capacity within its one-million-square-foot terminal, which features three levels, 49 aircraft gates, 100 ticket counters, and 12 baggage claims. This leaves no additional space for sleep pods or in-airport hotels.
  • Future Enhancements Exclude Sleep Pods: The DCA Reimagined project, aimed at enhancing Terminal 2, does not include sleep pods in its list of improvements. Instead, the focus is on expanding space for more restrooms, increasing privacy, enhancing companion care rooms, and adding contemporary seating, children’s play areas, pet relief areas, and private nursing rooms, all aimed at improving passenger comfort and convenience.

Unlike Dulles located some 39 miles away from the Capital, DCA is only 6 miles to the Capital in an area right across from the Potomac River. It’s quite difficult to find more expansion space for this airport. Read about Dulles Airport Sleep Guide here.

Is DCA Open 24 Hours?

DCA airport is open 24 hours and passengers can access the airport’s landside at all times of the day to catch some ZZZs. However, airside access is restricted after the TSA security checkpoints close, typically around 9:00 PM or following the departure of the last flight. The closure of TSA checkpoints, along with airline baggage services and concessions, leads to reduced activity until operations resume at 4:30 AM.

If you find yourself in the terminal’s public area (landside) after hours, access to the secure area (airside) will be unavailable until the following morning. For your convenience, a 24-hour restaurant and a news shop offering snacks and more are available. You can find these at Dunkin’ Donuts and CNBC News, both located in the National Hall near the walkway to Terminal A.

When Does DCA Airport Open?

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) operates security checkpoints that open early to accommodate travelers. All checkpoints, including Terminal 1, North Security, and South Security, open at 4:00 AM. The operating hours vary for each checkpoint; however, the earliest any passenger can begin their airport check-in and security process is at 4:00 AM. This early opening ensures that travelers catching early flights can do so without hassle.

Checkpoint LocationOpening HoursClosing Hours
Terminal 1 Checkpoint4:00 AM9:00 PM
North Security Checkpoint4:00 AM11:00 PM
South Security Checkpoint4:00 AM9:00 PM

If you’re wondering what time Reagan Airport opens, you should note that the official opening of DCA and that of any other airport starts when TSA starts security screening. For DCA, this time is at 4:00 AM at which time airlines can start processing passenger check-in and baggage drop-offs.

How is sleep situation at DCA Airport?

At Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA), sleeping options are varied but generally involve some trade-offs. Terminal 2, especially near gates D44 A&B, D42, D41, and D43, is relatively empty after 11 PM but suffers from bright lights, loud announcements, and frequent floor cleaning, making it crucial to bring noise-canceling headphones or earplugs and warm layers due to the cold.

The E Concourse offers cozy blue chairs near gates E49-E51, while “The Hangar” by Pepsi in the D Concourse provides padded benches and occasional blanket distribution.

The third floor near the American Airlines ticketing area is a quieter landside option, though it lacks food and charging stations. Despite these amenities, sleeping at DCA often requires improvisation, such as using bags as pillows and clothing as blankets, with a need for heightened security awareness.

Where to Sleep at DCA Airport:

Reagan National Airport (DCA) offers several sleeping options for travelers needing to rest overnight. Below are some of the best locations and tips for sleeping at the airport:

Sleeping Options at Terminal 2 of the Airport

Gate D44 A&B, D42, D41, D43 (Post-11 PM)

Pros: Relatively empty after 11 PM.
Cons: Frequent floor cleaners, bright lights, loud announcements, very cold.
Recommendations: Use the ground for sleeping with your bag under your knees and legs propped up. Clothing or a hat can serve as a light mask/pillow. Noise-canceling headphones or earplugs are essential. Layer up due to the cold.

E Concourse (Cozy Blue Chairs near Gates E49, E50, E51)

Pros: Lots of room.
Cons: Bright lights.
Recommendations: Pick your spot on the floor or use the cozy blue chairs.

Delta Sky Club (Terminal 2)

Cons: Access only 3 hours prior to the flight.

D Concourse – “The Hangar” by Pepsi

Pros: Padded benches, blankets provided by workers around 2 AM.
Cons: Some noise, lack of charging stations.
Recommendations: Another good spot is near gate E55 with comfortable chairs and a quieter environment.

Gate 49 (Terminal B/C)

Pros: Security open 24/7, comfy blue chairs with headrests and footrests, overhead music.
Cons: Close to others who may not want to sleep.

Landside – Third Floor near American Airlines Ticketing Area

Pros: Safety, quiet due to light construction nearby.
Cons: No food available, limited charging areas.
Recommendations: Use the seating on floor 3, relatively quiet compared to other busy floors.

General Recommendations for Overnight Sleepers

Comfort Items: Noise-canceling headphones or earplugs, eye masks, blankets, or layers of clothing. See our list of airport sleep items here.
Safety and Security: Secure personal belongings, stay near security or well-lit areas.
Sleep Tips: Use available benches or padded seating, avoid floor if possible due to cold and cleaning activities.

The airside offers several armrest-free chairs suitable for resting. However, please note that access to the airside is restricted after the airport closes at 11 PM, and you will be directed to move to the landside.

Unfortunately, the landside is notorious for its poor sleep quality, largely due to chairs with armrests. Attempting to sleep on the floor might seem like a better option, but safety is a concern, with reviews mentioning instances of homeless people wandering in the landside area. Although the presence of security is reassuring, it doesn’t significantly improve the overall sleeping conditions.

Here are details to prepare for sleep at Reagan Airport:

The best geat to consider carrying to be prepared for an overnight layover at DCA include;

  • Sleep mat: A lightweight and compact inflatable sleep mat can provide some much-needed cushioning when trying to rest on the hard airport floor.
  • Travel pillow: A travel pillow can offer neck support and make it easier to find a comfortable sleeping position in an unfamiliar environment.
  • Earplugs or noise-canceling headphones: These can help block out any loud noises coming from people or machines in the airport.
  • Eye mask: For those sensitive to light, an eye mask can help create a darker sleeping environment.
  • Warm clothing and blanket: Airports can get chilly at night, so it’s best to have warm layers of clothing and a blanket to stay comfortable while sleeping.
  • Portable charger: To make sure your electronic devices don’t run out of battery during the overnight layover, it’s a good idea to have a portable charger on hand.
  • Snacks and water: It’s essential to stay hydrated and nourished during an overnight layover, so be sure to pack some snacks and a reusable water bottle.

Overall, while sleeping at DCA may not be the most comfortable or ideal option, being prepared with these items can make the experience more bearable.

In addition to these items, there are also some important safety measures to keep in mind when sleeping at the airport. These include:

  • Staying aware of your surroundings: It’s crucial to remain vigilant and aware of what is happening around you, especially if you are traveling alone. Keep an eye on any potential suspicious activity and trust your gut instincts.

If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, it’s best to find a different place to sleep.

  • Keeping your belongings close: Make sure to keep all of your important possessions (passport, wallet, phone) in a secure location and within your reach while sleeping at the airport. It’s also a good idea to use a lock on your luggage if possible.
  • Informing someone about your plans: If you are traveling alone, it’s a good idea to let a friend or family member know about your overnight layover and where you plan to sleep. This can provide an extra layer of safety and security.
  • Follow airport rules and regulations: Be sure to follow all airport rules and regulations while sleeping at DCA. This includes not blocking walkways, smoking in designated areas only, and not sleeping in restricted or unauthorized areas.

Does DCA Have a Hotel inside the Airport?

Unfortunately, DCA lacks an on-site landside hotel or transit hotel and is likely due to space limitations caused by its compact layout. The airport encompasses a three-level terminal spanning one million square feet, accommodating 49 aircraft gates. It features “National Hall,” a central corridor filled with shops and eateries on the concourse level. With 100 ticket counters and 12 baggage claims, the terminal is maximally utilized, leaving no spare room for a hotel facility.
