Nap Pod Alternatives for Sleeping in Tampa Airport

I’ve got some bad news for all sleep pod fans in Tampa Airport. Despite previous availability, the cutting-edge capsule-style sleeping pods introduced in 2021 are no longer operational. However, this Tampa Airport Sleeping Guide has all details of snoozing spots within the terminals as well as other nearby hotel recommendations to consider.

This initiative towards innovative sleep technology may have been influenced by Tampa Airport ranking as the 6th U.S. airport with the highest percentage of flight delays in 2023. Despite 26.9% of its flights being canceled, it performed slightly better in terms of cancellations compared to Orlando Airport at 30%, Las Vegas at 29.7%, and Fort Lauderdale at 29.5%.

As of 2023, Tampa Airport serves more than 10 million passengers annually, and the introduction of innovative sleeping solutions has been warmly received by those experiencing layovers here as per reviews posted on TampaBay.com here and on Wfla.com here.

It is important to note that Tampa Airport does not prohibit fliers from sleeping at its airport terminal waiting areas as it is open 24 hours. However, most of the benches and chairs have armrests and may have to resort to sleep on its carpeted floor.

Does Tampa Airport Have Sleeping Pods?

Unfortunately, the sleep pods at Tampa Airport are no longer operational.

Previously, Tampa Airport partnered with a start-up called Nap Pod to install sleep pods branded as MetroNaps EnergyPods and designed by a New York-based company called Restworks and with a similar look as Finnish GoSleep pods.

In September 2021, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nap Pod founder and CEO Scott Chester purchased two pods for $30,000 from RestWorks, as reported in a Tampa Bay feature.

A 20-minute zero-gravity pod session at TPA is priced at $16, while a full hour comes to $48, inclusive of fees and tax. If you have frequent layovers in Tampa, you can get a monthly pass for $240.75. These prices are from website features dating back to 2022 and couldn’t find the latest 2024 pricing info.

When I tried to check the availability of the nap pods or how I can book them online through the official NapPods.net website, I didn’t find a booking link or information on current pricing. I will update this post when the booking link is reactivated on its website. If you want to make a booking, you can give them a call using this phone number; 813-906-7773 or using this email;info@nappod.net

Other innovative sleep pods solutions such as Minute Suites, Escape Pods, YotelAir, SleepBox, or GoSleep Pods are not available at Tampa Airport. I couldn’t find any information on the official tampaairport.com website on existing plans to introduce more innovative sleep facilities in the future.

I think it is a fair assumption to suggest that if Nap Pods company hasn’t expanded beyond their initial 2 sleep pods, they are likely struggling to keep up with demand, especially considering that Tampa Airport experiences over a quarter of its flights being canceled annually.

Although I cannot provide a definitive confirmation, it appears that Nap Pods may not be operational at the moment. This is indicated by the lack of recent activity on the company’s social media platforms and the absence of active booking links for clients. Additionally, there is no information regarding the presence of Nap Pods on the official Tampa Airport website.

Nap Pods Alternatives at Tampa Airport:

There are no designated sleep or rest areas at Tampa Airport and you have two key options in the absence of innovative pay-per-use sleep facilities.

Free Sleeping spots:

From the reviews of Tampa Airport, passengers have shared various locations within the airport where they’ve found comfort and rest during their layovers or ahead of their flights. Here are the sleeping locations suggested by flyers:

  1. Beyond the Southwest Check-In Counter: Located on the second floor, past the Southwest check-in counter and under the escalator. This spot features two cushioned benches in a relatively isolated area, ideal for a long layover rest.
  2. Desks Near Gates 62-68: Some desks where passengers can sit and charge their devices also offer a quiet spot for a nap, especially underneath these desks. This area is described as quiet, with minimal foot traffic, and is near a smoking patio outside.
  3. Airport Chapel in the Main Terminal: The chapel is open all night for airport staff and passengers, offering a secluded place with a blanket provided. Although the light stays on and there might be some noise from the intercom, it’s a recommended spot for free overnight stay.
  4. Third Floor Baggage Claim Area: For a free option, benches in the Baggage Claim area on the third floor are available but may not always be available or security may ask you to leave. This landside option offers a place to rest without needing to leave the airport. I found one review on sleepinginairports.net website that mentioned that noted that security could ask you to leave if they find you sleeping.
  5. Airside at the Back of Gates 1 to 45: Couches and lie-down furniture are available near these gates, providing more comfortable options for resting compared to typical airport seating. Pass 24-hour Starbucks and the long-term parking sign and you’ll find them at the back.

Sleep in Hotel Inside TPA Airport: Marriott Tampa Airport

Marriott Tampa Airport is conveniently located within the main terminal, easily accessible from the Transfer Level. Situated directly off the second-level concourse, it is very easy to find. There are many great reviews of this airport on Tripadvisor here such as this one left by Monda Venture in Jan 2024;

Marriott Tampa Hotel - great sleep option at Tampa Airport if you don't like the nap pods.

“Great people, great value, perfect location, very clean and enjoyable airport hotel: Tampa Airport Marriott is located directly off the second level concourse, so it’s easy and fast to find. I didn’t have a reservation, but I got a great front desk check in by D’Andra that was positive and professional.

My room was 408 with King bed and a view of the airport. The room has solid furniture including a good wood desk and ergonomic chair. The bathroom is modern and perfectly clean. The shower is hot with decent water flow.

I got my wake-up call on time and from a friendly real person (I think…I was pretty sleepy).

In the lobby there’s a café bar with surprisingly great coffee, and very good French madeleines — and it was very reasonably priced.

There’s a bright and spotless clean breakfast /TV area, and a patio with a pagoda and palm trees.

This is a hidden gem of a hotel, and reminds me why Marriott is always a solid choice. I just wish I’d chosen a Marriott for the rest of my weekend in Tampa!”

Avoid Sleeping in these Areas at Tampa Airport:

According to a number of reviews I obtained from various online forum and review sites, some of the locations that fliers noted that you should sleep at include;

  1. Baggage Claim Area: This area gets mentioned negatively due to the operation management and the likelihood of being asked to leave if found sleeping there. It’s implied that this isn’t a welcoming spot for trying to rest.
  2. Sky Connect: The tram system at the airport, known as Sky Connect, received complaints about cleanliness and odors, specifically indicating it was not a pleasant or hygienic place to sleep or even spend time in.
  3. Terminals F and C: One review highlighted these terminals as lacking in sleeping spots, quietness due to loud announcements, and availability of food or drink overnight, making them unsuitable for a comfortable overnight stay.
  4. General Terminal Areas After Midnight: A review mentioned that the terminals close before midnight, forcing travelers to sleep in the main terminal and reclear security in the morning. The review suggested the experience of trying to sleep in these conditions is less than ideal due to the lack of privacy, comfort, and the noise from announcements and overnight cleaning crews.
  5. Baggage Claim Seats: Although not explicitly stated as an area to avoid for sleeping, a complaint about the lack of seats in the terminal waiting area due to flight delays could imply this is not a comfortable or reliable area for resting, especially for those who might be elderly or disabled.

Concluding Thoughts on Sleeping Options at Tampa Airport:

In conclusion, while Tampa Airport offers various areas where travelers might attempt to rest, finding a comfortable spot for a good night’s sleep within the airport can be challenging as it doesn’t have designated sleeping zones.

The Baggage Claim Area and Sky Connect tram system are particularly noted for their lack of comfort and welcoming ambiance, with Terminals F and C also falling short due to noise and lack of amenities.

If you are seeking a spot within the airport, the main terminal areas, despite their shortcomings, may be the best bet for a rest, albeit with the necessity to reclear security in the morning.

The best spot to sleep in this airport for free is beyond the SouthWest Check-in counter with cushioned benches and at the Airport Chapel where you may get a blanket.

If you are willing to invest in a more comfortable rest as you catch some Zs, Tampa Airport has nearby hotel options that provide the comfort and amenities needed for a rejuvenating sleep. The Marriott Tampa Airport is highly recommended for travelers looking for convenience and comfort. Located within the airport, this hotel offers luxurious bedding, soundproof windows, and easy access to the terminals, ensuring a peaceful night’s sleep without leaving the airport complex.

Additionally, if you are looking for a brief rest without booking a hotel room, sleep pods could be a great option if still being offered. While Tampa Airport’s Nap Pods’ booking link appears to be inactive with possibility that they’ve been closed. You can try reaching out to them to get info. These pods if still available provide a private, secure space for travelers to relax or sleep for a few hours between flights, offering features like adjustable lighting, Wi-Fi, and charging stations.

In summary, while free sleeping spots in Tampa Airport are limited and come with challenges, options like nearby hotels or the prospect of accessible sleep pods in the future present viable alternatives for travelers seeking a comfortable rest.
